The Historic Café “Megalo Kafeneio 1929” was inaugurated in 1929. It was then called “Panellinion”. It is the only Café in Greece that has a theatrical stage! The Cafe flourished during the interwar period but also later, hosting theatrical plays and touring troupes of the time. Fotopoulos, Avlonitis, Attic, Mimis Plessas, Manos Katrakis are some of the personalities that have passed through the Café’s historical stage.

It is worth noting that this Historic Cafe was chosen by the great Greek Film Director Theodoros Angelopoulos for the shooting of the iconic film “Thiasos” which is one of the 10 best films of all time! “Megalo Kafeneio 1929″ has offered a lot in the country’s culture as it supported the so-called “bouloukia” ancestors of today’s Regional Theaters. Today it operates under a new management but has retained all important elements of its cultural identity.
